Mindfulness programs are emerging as powerful ways to calm kids down, sharpen their brain and make them kinder to their classmates. Mindfulness practice is centered in the practice of breathing. As the founder of NTCC, I am committed to promoting mindfulness in the young, over-stimulated mind by beginning each rehearsal with breathing practice and ending each rehearsal with a universal chant. Chorale children will use internal vibrations found in the body-  produced internally -to induce improved focus, better self control, less depression, better math scores, increased kindness, and fewer ADHD symptoms. All our singers will be encouraged to practice these breathing skills outside the chorale setting and apply mindfulness in each day. These practices are part of an on-going study at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Scientists are teaching preschoolers yoga poses and meditations, and after just two weeks of practice, these kids have better awareness, gratitude and happiness compared to a control group of children. “What's amazing is that this brief exposure appears to be so powerful,” says lead researcher Simone Nguyen, a developmental-psychology professor at the university. Techniques like these seem to work for kids all the way up to high school seniors.  Mindful arts will be a central theme every singing season for children in the North Texas Children's Chorale. Our first revival NTCC season study focus will include Latin and Sanskrit vocal chants--both are ancient forms which are used in mindfulness practices around the globe today.

About Us

The North Texas Children's Chorale is a co-educational audition choir which enhances every child's music education experience beyond the grade school curriculum. Our children's chorale was founded in early 2000 and we now celebrate the honor of some of our NTCC graduates who are music majors and professional music educators around the State. The North Texas Children's Chorale staff includes college music major interns from local universities to integrate future music educators in to our annual seasonal rehearsals, programs, performances, and tours. We also offer private or partner lessons with a Senior Voice Instructor and a Junior Voice Instructor for more intricate vocal work on a weekly basis. We base our singing season on the traditional school year. Each year we focus on a distinctive genres or period in music history. Every chorale member will implement Solfeg sight reading and incorporate the use of foreign languages such as Latin, Italian, German, French, and ancient sanskrit. We perform concerts, complete recording sessions of performance repertoire, and end each season with a tour. Our annual tours involve a university campus visit or university campus dorm stay to advance every choir member's awareness of the exceptional opportunities found in this country's higher education institutions and to encourage goal setting for future college considerations.
